BURLINGTON, VT --- Pete Alonso went 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI single and RBI triple, while starter Harold Gonalez struckout 11 over seven innings to lead the Brooklyn Cyclones to a 5-3 New York-Penn League victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters Thursday night.
Gonzalez (3-1), who entered the game with the NY-Penn League lead with 52 strikeouts, allowed just one run on six hits with no walks and 11 strikeouts in his seven innings. The only run he gave up came on an Eli White solo homer in the third. There were 28 total strikeouts in the contest as Gonzalez and reliever Gary Cornish (four strikeouts) combined for no walks and 15 strikeouts in the victory, while three Vermont pitchers combined for four walks and 13 strikeouts.
The Cyclones jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first after Vermont starter A.J. Puk had retired the first two batters Colby Woodmansee got the two-out rally with a double and scored the RBI single from Alonso, who later scored on a Desmond Lindsay RBI single.
Brooklyn added two unearned runs in the third on the RBI triple from Alonso, who scored on a Jacob Zanon sacrifice fly. Puk (0-1) finished with four runs (two earned) on four hits with two walks and four strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings.
Lake Monsters reliever Xavier Altamirano went the next 4 1/3 innings, allowing an Ali Sanchez RBI double in the sixth with two hits, one walk and five strikeouts. The run raised Altamirano's ERA to 0.99 overall.
Vermont was able to cut the deficit in half with two runs in the eighth off Cornish on a Brett Sunde sacrifice fly and Jhonny Rodriguez RBI single. Rodriguez, White, Luis Barrera and Nate Mondou each had two hits for the Lake Monsters, who outhit the Cylcones 10-6 in the game, but lost for the fifth straight game. It is the longest losing streak for Vermont (17-22) since dropping five straight August 15-22, 2015.
The Lake Monsters and Cyclones will play the second of the three-game series at Centennial Field on Friday night starting at 7:05 pm. It is the annual Summer of Love with a Ben & Jerry's groovy baseball giveaway for the first 500 fans.
