Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS, Ohio (Tuesday, December 6) - The Columbus Crew will host a viewing party this Friday, Dec. 9, at 3 p.m. (ET) in the Huntington Club at Crew Stadium as fans will be able to watch live on ESPN2 when the U.S. learns its opponents for the 2006 FIFA World Cup at the Final Draw in Leipzig, Germany.
Complimentary snacks and beverages will be available in the Huntington Club. The Draw festivities begin at 2:30 p.m. Eastern Time, with the broadcast slated for a 3 p.m. start and the actual selections tentatively scheduled to begin around 3:20 p.m. FIFA announced the eight seeded teams for the 2006 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday afternoon, as well as the placement of all teams into Pots A, B, C and D, which will determine the USA's potential opponents.
Fans who are unable to get to a television on Friday afternoon can also follow along on ussoccer.com's extensive and exclusive live DrawTracker commentary, with detailed breakdowns of each team and venue.
The U.S. learned earlier today that it has been placed in Pot 4 alongside fellow CONCACAF countries Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago, as well as the four Asian qualifiers (Iran, Japan, Saudi Arabia and South Korea). With Mexico being placed as one of eight seeds in Pot 1, the U.S. will be placed in a group with either Germany, Brazil, Argentina, England, France, Italy or Spain. The remaining two U.S. opponents will come one each from Pot 2 and Pot 3 below.
Pot 1: England, France, Germany (host), Italy, Mexico, Spain; Argentina, Brazil (defending champion)
Pot 2: Australia; Angola, Ghana, Ivory Coast, Togo, Tunisia; Ecuador, Paraguay
Pot 3: Croatia, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Ukraine
Pot 4: Iran, Japan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea; Costa Rica, Trinidad & Tobago, USA
Pot X: Serbia & Montenegro
To summarize, the U.S. will play one team each from Pot 1, Pot 2 and Pot 3, avoiding the four Asian teams, the other three CONCACAF qualifiers (including Mexico as a Pot 1 seed) and Serbia & Montenegro from Pot X.
The U.S. is one of 32 finalists that will compete in the 2006 FIFA World Cup, qualifying first from CONCACAF and finishing atop the group in CONCACAF for the first time. The USA has chosen the northern port city of Hamburg as its base of operations in Germany.
