Real Salt Lake News Release
SALT LAKE CITY (Tuesday, December 6, 2005) - Real Salt Lake today announced that it will open its 2006 campaign on the road against Chivas USA on Sunday, April 2 at The Home Depot Center, while its first home game features the MetroStars on Saturday, April 15 at Rice-Eccles Stadium. Kickoff times for both games are yet to be determined. The balance of Real Salt Lake's 32-game, 2006 MLS regular-season schedule will be announced shortly after the New Years.
"The 2006 season is just around the corner. It's exciting to begin anew, and anybody who was at our Inaugural Home Game in 2005 knows what an amazing atmosphere and event it can be," said RSL General Manager Steve Pastorino.
The last meeting against Chivas USA was an exhibition grudge match at Rice-Eccles Stadium that ended in a 1-0 victory for the home side on October 28. The only goal of the game was scored by rookie Jamie Watson early in the second half as he found Chivas âkeeper Sergio Garcia off his line, floating a shot over Garcia and into the net in the 60th minute. The regular season series between the two clubs ended level at two a piece with RSL emerging victorious on Aug. 6 in a 2-1 win at home on ESPN2.
Real's firsthome bout in 2006 will be against the MetroStars with the series history consisting of two draws. During the last meeting, RSL came from behind in the final 11 minutes to tie the game 2-2 with goals by FW Jason Kreis and MF Seth Trembly at Rice-Eccles Stadium on July 4. During the team's first meeting at the Meadowlands in New Jersey on April 2, terrible weather conditions - including winds of up to 48 miles per hour and torrential rain - forced RSL and the MetroStars into a scoreless draw.
