Columbus Crew SC News Release
COLUMBUS - The Columbus Crew today announced that it has acquired midfielder Alvaro Rey from Toronto FC in exchange for forward Dominic Oduro. Per club and MLS policy, additional terms of the deal were not disclosed.
"Alvaro is a technically gifted player that we are excited to welcome to Columbus," said Crew Sporting Director and Head Coach Gregg Berhalter. "This agreement provides us with a player that we believe can be successful in our system of play through dynamic one-versus-one play and the ability to maintain possession in tight spaces. This move also provides us with financial flexibility for the future as we continue building our roster."
Berhalter continues, "We would like to thank Dominic for his service to the Crew. He is a fantastic personality and was a pleasure to work with. We wish him the best of luck in the next stage of his career."
Rey made 20 appearances - including 15 starts - for Toronto FC, beginning his MLS career in a substitute appearance against the Crew on July 27, 2013. In his time in Toronto, he recorded one goal and added one assist in League action. He also made three appearances in the Amway Canadian Championship in 2014. Prior to joining the Reds, the 24-year-old Rey spent 2012-2013 at Spanish side Xerez and scored three goals in 28 appearances. His professional career began at GimnÃÂ stic de Tarragona, also in Spain. In two seasons with his first club, the winger made 54 appearances and recorded one tally.
Oduro departs the Crew in his second season with the Black & Gold. Oduro did not record a goal or an assist in 11 appearances for the club in 2014, as he moves on to his sixth career MLS team. The forward recorded a career-high season in 2013 in which he scored 13 goals for the Crew. Oduro, 28, joined MLS in 2006 with stops at FC Dallas, New York Red Bulls, Houston Dynamo and Chicago Fire before arriving in Columbus.
The Crew concludes its stretch of three contests in eight days when it plays its final match before the 2014 FIFA World Cup break tomorrow at D.C. United (6:30 p.m. ET / Time Warner Cable SportsChannel). The clash takes place at FedExField as part of a Road to Brazil doubleheader, beginning with an international friendly between Spain and El Salvador.
