Hickory Crawdads News Release
SALISBURY, MD - The Hickory Crawdads, 1st-Half Northern Division Champions, took their second straight win against the Delmarva Shorebirds, 9-6, before 2,361 fans at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Sunday evening.
The Shorebirds (45-49, 10-14) took the early lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first against RHP Matt Thompson. Three straight walks started the frame to load the bases with no outs. After a strikeout, DH Michael Ohlman was hit by a pitch to force in the first run and C Joe Oliveira followed with a sacrifice fly, making it 2-0.
Hickory (56-36, 16-8) responded right away in the top of the second against LHP Tim Berry (L, 3-6). 3B Christian Villanueva led off with a solo home run, cutting the deficit in half. One out later, 1B Jhonny Gomez worked a walk and C Kellin Deglan was hit by a pitch, putting two on. 2B Yefry Castillo singled, loading the bases for SS Jurickson Profar. Profar then promptly unloaded the bases with a grand slam, belting Hickory in front, 5-2. It was the Crawdads fifth grand slam of the season, tying the all-time Hickory record for most in a season.
The 'Dads added a sixth run on an RBI single by C Kellin Deglan in the top of the third, but Delmarva countered with a two-run single from DH Michael Ohlman in the bottom of the frame to keep it close, 6-4. Both teams then alternated scoring a run in their respective halves of the fourth, leaving it at 7-5.
After the Shorebirds came one run closer with an unearned tally against RHP Ben Rowen (W, 2-2), the Crawdads plated two insurance runs in the top of the eighth. 2B Yefry Castillo led off with a triple, before LF Teodoro Martinez drove him in with a sacrifice fly one out later. DH Andrew Clark stepped up next and belted a solo homer over the right field wall, giving the Crawdads the 9-6 lead.
LHP Jimmy Reyes (S, 1) took over to start the eighth after RHP Colby Killian tossed a scoreless seventh inning. Reyes struck out the side in the eighth and followed with a scoreless ninth, closing the 9-6 win for Hickory.
