Salisbury, Md. - The Hickory Crawdads (56-36, 16-8) hit three home runs en route to a 9-6 win over the Delmarva Shorebirds (45-49, 10-14) on Sunday night at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The Crawdads have secured the series win by winning the first two games of the series.
Hickory starter Matt Thompson, who lasted 3.2 innings, was erratic at the start, which led to early runs. Michael Mooney, Brenden Webb and Jeremy Nowak were all issued walks to begin the bottom of the first. After a strikeout of Adam Gaylord, Michael Ohlman was hit by a pitch to force in the first run. The next batter, Joe Oliveira, hit a sacrifice fly RBI to center field to give the Shorebirds a 2-0 lead.
The Crawdads responded immediately in the second. Christian Villanueva hit a leadoff homer over the left field wall to cut the deficit to 2-1. After two walks and single loaded the bases, Jurickson Profar hit a grand slam over the left field wall to put the Crawdads in front 5-2.
In the third, Hickory added a run on an RBI single by Kellin Deglan to increase the lead to 6-2.
The Shorebirds started to comeback in the third. Brenden Webb was issued a leadoff walk and Jeremy Nowak hit a double off the right-center field wall to put runners at second and third. In the fourth inning, the Crawdads added a run on a single by Josh Richmond to score Profar, who led off with a double down the left field line, to stretch the lead to 7-4.
The Shorebirds tallied a run in the fourth. Michael Rooney drew a leadoff walk and scored later on a single by Michael Mooney. In the sixth inning, the Shorebirds capitalized on a throwing error by Profar, which scored Mooney to cut the deficit to 7-6.
