Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, NC - The Hickory Crawdads struck for six runs in the bottom of the third inning en route to the 8-5 win against the Lakewood BlueClaws before 2,992 fans at L.P. Frans Stadium on Monday afternoon. Hickory set a new Crawdads record with eight stolen bases in the game, the most since April 17, 1998, when the Crawdads stole six bases against the Macon Braves.
The BlueClaws (28-29) plated a quick run in the top of the first against RHP Cody Buckel (W, 1-2). LF Miguel Alvarez got on with a one-out single, and advanced all the way to third on a two-base throwing error committed by Buckel on a pick off attempt. Alvarez came home later on a two-out RBI double by 1B Jim Murphy, making it 1-0.
Hickory (31-26) responded with a run in the bottom of the second to tie the game. CF Jake Skole bunted his way on with a single to start the inning, and then stole third base one out later. 2B Odubel Herrera followed with an RBI single to right field, plating Skole to square the score, 1-1.
The Crawdads kept swinging away against LHP Mario Hollands (L, 4-4) in the bottom of the third, plating six runs to take their first lead of the game. DH Christian Villanueva sparked the big inning with a one-out walk and was joined on the bases when RF Josh Richmond was hit by a pitch. Skole brought in both runners with a two-run triple that he ripped down the right-field line, putting the 'Dads in front, 3-1. 1B Jhonny Gomez returned the favor, bringing in Skole with an RBI single, before advancing to second on a base hit by Herrera. 3B Jonathan Roof then placed an RBI double right inside the left-field line, scoring Gomez and pushing Herrera to third. The Crawdads continued the charge with a sacrifice fly by CF Teodoro Martinez to plate Herrera and an RBI single by SS Jurickson Profar to bring in Roof, capping the rally and giving the 'Dads the 7-1 lead.
Lakewood began chipping away at the deficit in the top of the fourth. Buckel retired the first two batters in a row, but RF Domingo Santana kept the inning going with a double, and then raced home on an RBI single by CF Aaron Altherr to cut the 'Dads lead to 7-2. Buckel got out of the rest of the frame, and then tossed a scoreless fifth to conclude his outing.
The BlueClaws continued to come back with three runs (two earned) in the top of the sixth against RHP Jorge Marban. Back-to-back walks by Murphy and C Jeff Lanning began the frame. 3B Geancarlo Mendez and RF Domingo Santana drove in both runners with consecutive RBI singles, before Altherr knocked in the third run of the stanza with an RBI fielder's choice, pulling the BlueClaws within two runs, 7-5. RHP Ryan Rodebaugh (S, 7) took over on the mound and retired the next two batters to keep the 'Dads in the multi-run lead.
Hickory stretched the lead right back out in the bottom of the sixth against RHP Jacob Borup. Telis belted a one-out double to get himself into scoring position, and then RF Josh Richmond followed suit with a two-out RBI double to bring Telis in and make it 8-5.
Rodebaugh continued to shut down the Lakewood offense late in the game, allowing only one hit while striking out four through 3.2 scoreless innings of work to close the 8-5 win for Hickory.
