Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - For the second time in as many nights, bullpen woes cost the Charleston RiverDogs late as the Augusta GreenJackets picked up a pair of two-out runs in the eighth inning to earn a 2-1 win over the RiverDogs on Monday night.
With runners at the corners and two outs in the eighth, Ehire Adrianza's single to left-center was booted by RiverDogs center fielder Eduardo Sosa. Jeff Arnold scored easily from third to tie the game while Chris Lofton raced all the way around from first after the error to give the GreenJackets their first lead of the night at 2-1.
The RiverDogs never threatened in the ninth as Drew Bowlin struck out one and retired the side in order to earn his third save of the year and preserve the 2-1 win.
Charleston struck first for the second night in a row, taking a 1-0 lead in the second on Sosa's RBI single. The run stood as the only one in the game until the eighth inning as the RiverDogs and GreenJackets locked horns throughout in their second straight pitchers' duel in the series.
Justin Schumer - making just his second home start of the season - fired six innings and allowed a run on four hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Schumer retired the side in order three times in six innings. His counterpart Jose Ramirez was a nod better, tossing six scoreless innings of one-hit ball with two walks and four strikeouts.
Seth Rosin (2-2) earned the win in relief of Schumer, striking out two in two scoreless, hitless innings. Nathan Forer (1-4) took the loss for the RiverDogs, allowing two runs - one earned - on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
With the win, the GreenJackets have now won their last five games against Charleston and can earn their first series sweep of the year on Tuesday in the series and homestand finale. Taylor Rogers (4-6, 2.67) gets the ball for the GreenJackets and will face Mikey O'Brien (3-4, 3.79) of the RiverDogs. First pitch will come at 7:05 with pregame coverage beginning at 6:50, with the broadcast airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com .
