CHARLESTON, W. Virginia - After a 1:52 delay before first pitch due to rain, the Hickory Crawdads dropped the opener of a four-game series, 7-1, against the West Virginia Power before 2,310 fans at Appalachian Power Park.

After three scoreless innings of work by LHP Martin Perez (2-4) to start the game, the Power struck for six runs (only three earned) in the bottom of the fourth to move ahead, 6-0. RHP Mark Hamburger took over two-thirds of the way through the inning, before dealing a scoreless fifth inning to keep West Virginia (23-37) at six runs on the scoreboard.

Power starter LHP Rudy Owens (6-1) stifled the Hickory offense with seven shutout innings, only surrendering four hits while striking out eight. West Virginia's offense tacked on another run of support when SS Chase D'Arnaud hit a solo home run against RHP Jake Brigham to lead off the bottom of the seventh, making it 7-0. It was the only run allowed by Brigham in three innings of late relief.

Facing RHP Brian Leach in the bottom of the eighth, the Crawdads (28-30) got on the board. CF Cody Podraza singled with one out before advancing to second base with two outs on a passed ball. He then advanced to third base on a single by 2B Mike Hollander and scored on a wild pitch by Leach. However, Leach got out of the inning with no further damage done and escaped a bases-loaded jam in a scoreless ninth close out the 7-1 win for West Virginia. Perez was tagged with the loss for the Crawdads, while Owens earned the win for the Power.
