Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release
WALDORF, Md. - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs squared off against the Long Island Ducks for the second to last time in the 2013 Atlantic League Regular Season. After falling in game one of the series, the Blue Crabs looked to even things up in game two against the Ducks Wednesday night. Getting the ball for the Blue Crabs was Gaithersburg, Md native and team leader in wins, Ian Marshall. The Ducks countered with a righty of their own Bob Zimmermann. After the Ducks got out to an early lead, the Crabs rallied back but were unable to complete the comeback as the Ducks prevailed 5-3.
Blue Crabs newest addition, CF Donnie Webb, provided a spark for the Crabs early on as he legged out an infield single to short and advance to second on a throwing error. After moving to third on Renny Osuna's sacrifice bunt, Webb scurried home following a LF Jose Julio-Ruiz sacrifice fly to give the Blue Crabs the early 1-0 lead.
The lead was short lived however, as the Ducks stormed back for runs in the second, third and fourth innings to jump out in front to a 5-1 lead. Shortstop, Dan Lyons, highlighted the barrage single to centerfield that would bring in two Ducks to score in the second.
The Blue Crabs didn't give in as they put together a rally in the home half of the seventh inning. Osuna, walked and stole second to begin the inning. After a Julio-Ruiz singled to right to put runners on 1st and 3rd, second basemen, Jake Opitz grounded into a fielder's choice to bring in the first run of the inning. Ruiz would eventually come around to score the second run of the inning to pull the Blue Crabs closer at 5-3. The rally would fall short as Ducks would hold on to the 5-3 victory.
UP NEXT - The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs will aim to salvage the final game of the series when they take on the Long Island Ducks Thursday night at Regency Furniture Stadium at 7:05.
