Lancaster Stormers News Release

Butch Hobson switched pitchers for five consecutive batters on Wednesday night.

Each new pitcher got the job done as the Lancaster Barnstormers held off the Somerset Patriots, 2-1, in the middle game of the three-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

The Lancaster win temporarily staved off elimination in the Freedom Division race for the Barnstormers and simultaneously kept the Patriots from locking up a berth in the playoffs.

Derrick Loop (4-6) worked the first 6 2/3 innings for the Barnstormers, yielding four hits and a run while walking three and striking out five. He was lifted after retiring the first two batters in the seventh inning, 106 pitches into his night. Cody Eppley was the first pitcher summoned, but the sidewheeler failed to get an out. Angel Sanchez bounced a single off his glove, and Adam Donachie grounded a single into left. Eppley walked Jonny Tucker to load the bases. Hobson went to Ross Peeples, and the lefty got Aharon Eggleston to fly out to center on a full count pitch to end the threat.

Jason Richardson started the eighth and picked up the first out when Yunesky Sanchez fouled out to catcher Gustavo Molina. Zach Braddock came in and struck out Cory Aldridge for the second out. Brodie Downs faced Corey Smith and finished off the inning with a grounder to short.

Lancaster went to closer Yoslan Herrera for the ninth inning. The right-hander retired Jeff Baisley on a fly out to center before walking Jorge Cortes on a lengthy at bat. Angel Sanchez rapped into a 6-4-3 double play, initiated by Joe Thurston's diving stop to end the game. Herrera notched his eighth straight save and 11th of the year.

Somerset grabbed a 1-0 lead in the top of the third. Donachie ripped a one-out double into the left field corner, took third on a deep fly by Tucker and scored when Eggleston grounded a single up the middle.

The Barnstormers were able to answer in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Jerry Owens grounded a single up the middle. He immediately stole second, then scored when Olmo Rosario lashed a double inside the third base bag. Joe Thurston brought in Rosario with a base hit to right but was lost in a rundown after the Patriots cut off the throw from Cortes in right.

Lancaster had chances to extend the lead off Erik Arnesen (13-3) despite putting runners at first and second with nobody out in the fourth and loading the bases with nobody out in the sixth. Arnesen went the distance, despite yielding 10 hits on the evening, all to the top five in the Lancaster batting order.

The Barnstormers host the Patriots in the rubber game of the three-game series on Thursday. Dwayne Pollok (18-3) goes for the Atlantic League wins record against left-hander Roy Merritt (3-2). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.

NOTES: Owens extended his hitting streak to 10 while Rosario's current streak stands at nine...Herrera recorded a save for the eighth straight appearance...Owens also stole two bases to take over second place in the league with 32...Loop threw his fifth quality start and the team's 51st...Peeples appeared in his 308th Barnstormers game, three shy of the Atlantic League appearance record.
