New Jersey Jackals News Release

Atlantic City, NJ - New Jersey starter Jorge Acosta was brilliant in his Jackals debut, but Surf left-hander Adam Cox bested his southpaw counterpart as Atlantic City defeated New Jersey 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Bernie Robbins Stadium. With the win, the Surf earn the sweep against the Jackals in the first series of the second half of the season.

Cox (6-2) pitched eight shutout inning while scattering four hits to earn the victory. The Can-Am League's strikeout leader fanned eight Jackals hitters while walking two. For New Jersey, Acosta (0-1) went 7 2/3 and allowed two runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and a walk.

The Jackals best chance to score came in the top of the first inning when Cox walked leadoff hitter Zack Smithlin and allowed a single to SS Bryant Nelson. After a double steal put runners on second and third with no outs, Cox retired the next three batters in order to set New Jersey down.

The Surf struck immediately when, in the bottom of the first inning, SS Anthony Granato took Acosta's second pitch of the game out of the park to left center field. Granato's second home run of the season made it 1-0 Atlantic City. That score held until the bottom of the eighth inning when CF Lucas Taylor drew a one-out walk and scored two batters later on an RBI fielders choice off the bat of LF Joe Burke to extend the Surf lead to 2-0. In the top of the ninth, Surf closer Walker Whitley pitched a perfect frame to earn his second save in as many days. For New Jersey, LF Andrew Larsen finished the afternoon 2-3 at the plate, while both Granato and Taylor collected two hits for Atlantic City.

The Jackals return home to Yogi Berra Stadium on Thursday night when they begin a four-game series against the Worcester Tornadoes. Jackals lefty Isaac Pavlik makes the start with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. If you can't make it out to the ballpark, you can catch every inning via live webcast at www.jackals.com with the broadcast beginning at 11:00 a.m.
