Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
Winnipeg, MT, CA June 24, 2015 - The Winnipeg Goldeyes avoided a Gary South Shore RailCats broom Wednesday night behind a superb pitching effort from Coby Cowgill beating the South Shore 5-1. The win salvaged the final game of the series for the Goldeyes and ended a two game RailCats winning streak.
The Goldeyes picked up all their runs in the fifth inning off of RailCats starter Andy Roberts. Winnipeg for the third straight inning got the lead off man aboard and looked like they might waste their opportunity. But with two outs Brady Wilson doubled to right to score Kyle Brandenburg to make it 1-0. Adam Heisler added an infield single and Josh Mazzola another hit to bring in two more and it was 4-0.
Winnipeg added another run in the bottom of the seventh getting another RBI from Mazzola to make it 5-0. Cowgill was the story holding the RailCats in check until the eighth when Jon Jones picked up an RBI single off of the Goldeye starter to cut the lead to 5-1. After giving up a third inning single Cowgill retired nine straight RailCats. The right hander gave up just five hits walking one and striking out six to get the win.
The RailCats Roberts (0-3) suffered his second tough luck outing of the road trip getting the loss. He was charged with all four runs with four walks and four strike outs scattering eight hits. Cowgill (2-1) for his efforts earned the win and ended a three game losing streak for Winnipeg.
The RailCats will have an off day for travel and then return home to US Steel Yard to open a three game series against Lincoln Friday night and the first of a six game homestand. The Cats will send LHP Rene Solis (0-3, 4.04) to the mound while the Saltdogs will counter with LHP Kevin McGovern (1-1, 3.63). The game can be heard on 95.9 WEFM and online on RailCatsBaseball.com.
