Blasters Lose Ninth Inning Lead in Defeat

Joplin, MO-The Blasters gave up a ninth inning run for the first time this season and fell to Laredo 4-2 Wednesday night at Joe Becker Stadium.

With the win, Laredo (17-15) completed the sweep and handed Joplin its second three-game losing streak. The Blasters held a lead after the first inning for the first time in the series. With one out in the bottom of the first, Mitch Glasser reached base on a bloop single to left-center. Oscar Mesa followed with a line drive single to left. Glasser scored to make it 1-0 on a sacrifice fly to deep center off the bat of Yenier Bello.

The Lemurs leveled the game in the third before the Blasters (17-11) reclaimed a narrow lead in the fourth. Jarred Mederos led off the inning with a base hit to center. After two ground outs, Kevin Taylor singled sharply to left to score Mederos with the tying run. Leading off the bottom of the fourth, Carlos Ramirez put Joplin in front 2-1 as he socked his sixth home run of the season on a shot to deep left near the bleacher seats.

The Blasters one-run advantage held up until the top of the ninth. With closer Winston Abreu on the mound, Laredo's Juan Silverio tied the game with a two-strike home run to deep left. It was Silverio's second home run of the series and fifth of the season. Brian Peterson followed with a walk. The pinch runner, Ty Forney, was caught stealing at second. Luke Bailey struck out for the second out. Jarred Mederos then hit a bouncing ball to second and it was booted to continue the inning. Jeudy Valdez poked a soft liner toward second that was dropped for the second straight error of the inning. Abel Nieves walked to load the bases. Following a pitching change, Kevin Taylor lined a single to left-center that scored Mederos and Valdez for a 4-2 Lemurs lead. Joplin went 1-2-3 in the ninth to end the game.

On the mound, Laredo closer John Brebbia posted the win. Brebbia (1-1) worked an inning-and-a-third and struck out one. Winston Abreu suffered the loss for Joplin. Abreu (2-1) went two-thirds of an inning and allowed three runs (one earned) on one hit with one strikeout and two walks. Blasters starter Jorge Martinez had another solid outing as he went six innings and gave up one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Joplin outhit Laredo 8-to-7. Omar Luna went 2-for-4 for the Blasters. Kevin Taylor was 2-for-4 with three RBIs for the Lemurs. Both sides committed two errors in the contest.

Joplin begins a nine-game, eight-day road swing through Wichita and Laredo starting with a doubleheader against the Wingnuts Thursday night. First pitch of game one is set for 5:05.
