Kane County Cougars News Release

GENEVA, IL - In a game that involved a grand slam, a player's first pro homer, three comebacks and an ejection, the Kane County Cougars beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 8-7, Thursday night in front of 7,339 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars erased a 2-0 deficit, went ahead 6-2, fell behind 7-6 and ultimately won in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Justin Frash.

The Cougars fell behind, 2-0, in the second inning, and the score remained through five innings. Then in the sixth inning against reliever Chris Armstrong, the Cougars erupted. Greg Dowling smashed a grand slam with Todd Johnson, Jake Smith and Justin Frash on base, and Petey Paramore belted his first professional homer, a two-run blast that made it 6-2.

Starter Jamie Richmond responded to the offense's resurgence with a 1-2-3 seventh but ran into trouble during a four-run Kernels eighth. He ended up with a no-decision, allowing six runs -- five earned -- on 10 hits, walking one and fanning five.

Chad Kerfoot (6-1), who allowed the game-tying run on a close play that involved Cougars manager Aaron Nieckula's ejection, yielded an unearned run in the top of the ninth that put the Kernels ahead, 7-6. But the Cougars answered in the bottom of the ninth with two runs against Ysmael Carmona (1-4). Todd Johnson smoked a two-out double, and Jake Smith singled him home to make it 7-7. Then Frash singled in Smith to end the game and ignite the Cougars' on-field celebration.

The Cougars (24-29) and Kernels (29-24) conclude their three-game series Friday night at 6:30 CT when Anthony Capra (2-2, 4.33) faces Jose Perez (0-1, 9.00).
