Kane County Cougars News Release
Geneva IL - Kane County Cougars first baseman delivered a game-winning single in the bottom of the ninth on Saturday night, giving the Cougars a 6-5 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels in front of 12,325 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The win keeps Kane County alive for the final playoff spot in the Western Division with two games remaining and eliminates the Kernels from postseason contention, pending a Beloit win.
Everidge entered the game in the seventh as a pinch-hitter for Eddie Kim, came to the plate in the ninth with two outs and Cliff Pennington at second base and Travis Buck at first and delivered a bleeding RBI single off Kernels reliever Michel Simard for the walk-off victory.
Cedar Rapids took the lead in the first inning off Cougars starter Joe Scott when Sean Rodriguez led off the game with a home run for a quick 1-0 score, but Kane County answered in their half of the third against Francisco Cordova. Gregorio Petit doubled and scored from third on an error to tie it, 1-1. Then Travis Buck and Eddie Kim connected for back-to-back run-scoring doubles and a 3-1 lead, and Ryan Ruiz came home in the fourth to make it 4-1. After the Kernels got two in the fifth against Scott, Myron Leslie homered to pad the cushion, 5-3.
Scott gave up a round-tripper in the sixth before leaving, allowing four runs on six hits, walking one and fanning a career-high seven. Dan Fyvie (2-0) took over and allowed a game-tying run in the seventh before settling down to keep the score even and eventually notch the win. Simard (6-4) suffered the loss for Cedar Rapids.
The Cougars (35-33) and Kernels (34-34) continue their four-game series on Sunday afternoon at 5 CDT, as Ryan Ford (13-7, 4.22) toes the rubber against Fernando Rodriguez (8-9, 4.04) for the visitor.
