Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING- Juan Perez scattered six hits in five innings and Ben Harrison was even better, allowing only a pair in four shutout frames as the Lugnuts(69-68, 31-37) used a four-run second inning and the outstanding pitching to top West Michigan(72-66. 39-29) by a 5-1 score in front of 6,215 fans on Saturday night at Oldsmobile Park.
In a scoreless game in the second, the Lugnuts struck for four runs in the frame off Whitecaps starter Andrew Kown(8-11). Eugenio Velez's RBI single on the infield plated Yuber Rodriguez with the game's first run and later in the frame Christian Snavely drove home Alberto Quintana and Velez with a single to make it 3-0. Charlie Anderson's two-out RBI single plated Jason Armstrong to make it 4-0.
In six innings, Kown allowed eight hits and the four earned runs to take the loss. The right hander walked a pair and fanned three.
West Michigan got its lone run in the third on an RBI off the bat of Jeff Frazier, his team leading 80th that drove home Chris Robinson. Robinson went 3-4 in the game, but the rest of his teammates managed just five hits.
Perez(7-6) worked five frames and struck out six while allowing the lone run. He turned it over to Harrison in the sixth, who turned out the lights on any Whitecap ambitions of a comeback in the late innings for a second straight night.
In his Lugnut debut, the left hander fanned three and gave up a pair of doubles in four shutout innings to earn his first save of the season. Harrison set down the final seven batters he faced.
The Lugnuts closed out the scoring in the seventh when Klosterman hit his team best 13th homer, a two-out solo shot off Freddy Dolsi.
The Lugnuts and Whitecaps will continue their series tomorrow afternoon at 2:05 p.m. on the final Meijer Kids Day of the season. Left hander Jordan Timm will make the start for the Lugnuts while West Michigan counters with right hander Jeff Hahn.
