
Mann earns 10th win in Rays 9-1 victory

BATTLE CREEK, MICH. -- The Southwest Michigan Devil Rays won their 70th game of the season, ensuring an overall winning record, in a 9-1 defeat of the Swing of the Quad Cities Saturday night at C.O. Brown Stadium.
Brandon Mann became the second Devil Rays pitcher with 10 wins after six shutout innings that saw just three hits, three walks and one strikeout. Mann left with a 9-0 lead before Ryan Bitter, Austin Coose and Lavelle Morgan pitched the last three innings to finish the win.
Travis Schlichting had a three-hit performance, his seventh of the season, to lead the Rays. Shaun Cumberland hit his 13th home run of the year to spot the team a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Chris Nowak followed with his seventh blast of 2005 in the third to make it 5-0.
The Devil Rays other pitcher with 10 wins is Andy Sonnanstine (10-4) who was promoted to high-A Visalia on July 15.
Southwest Michigan (37-31, 70-67) is now two games behind West Michigan (39-29, 72-66) for the second half division title with two games to play. The Devil Rays will start Jino Gonzalez against Nick Webber for the Swing in a Sunday 2:05 p.m. start. It's McCullough Family Chiropractic Sunday and Staples Day. Kids can run the bases after the game.
