Kane County Cougars News Release

APPLETON, Wis.- Even though the Cougars (22-17, 67-42) out hit the Timber Rattlers (22-17, 58-50) all three games of the series, Wisconsin finished the sweep with a 7-3 win at Neuroscience Group Field at Fox Cities Stadium on Thursday evening. With the loss, the Cougars see their longest losing streak of the year extend to six.

Cael Brockmeyer gave the Cougars a chance to take the lead in the eighth inning when he doubled home Jeimer Candelario. Barrett Astin (7-5) limited the Cougars to just one run in that frame as he stranded Brockmeyer in scoring position.

Zak Hermans (2-3) provided a big shutdown inning when he came on in relief in the sixth with the bases loaded and one out, and didn't allow a run to score. After striking out the side in the seventh, Hermans found himself in some trouble in the eighth. With a runner on and one out, David Denson's ground ball almost turned into an inning ending double play, but a bad throw to first kept the inning alive. That play proved to be huge for Wisconsin as Clint Coulter walked for another base runner and Omar Garcia looped a triple down the right field line to break a 3-3 tie and hand the Timber Rattlers the lead. A pair of RBI knocks followed increasing Wisconsin's advantage 7-3.

The Cougars' first two runs came unearned on a Ben Carhart sacrifice fly in the first inning and Kevin Brown's RBI groundout in the fourth.

Heading back to Geneva for a short home stand, the Cougars welcome in the Quad Cities River Bandits beginning on Friday. Left-hander Tyler Ihrig will make the start for the Cougars against Quad Cities' lefty Blaine Sims (2-2, 4.35). First pitch from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark is at 6:30 p.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
