Peoria Chiefs News Release
BELOIT, WI - The Peoria Chiefs fell behind early and never caught up falling to the last-place Beloit Snappers 11-4 on Thursday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 21-18 in the second half and 58-50 on the season while Beloit moves to 13-25 and 43-65.
After both teams went in order in the first inning, Beloit scored eight runs over the next three innings against two different Chiefs hurlers. Starter Blake McKnight allowed two singles and a walk in the second as Beloit loaded the bases. A triple by Melvin Mercedes cleared the bases for a 3-0 lead and a Branden Cogswell sac fly made it 4-0. In the third inning Beloit scored on a groundout and a two-run triple by Cogswell for a 7-0 lead. Kevin Herget took over in the fourth and Beloit scored one run on three hits for an 8-0 lead.
The Chiefs did not have a hit until the fifth and hit into a double play after two errors in the fourth, Justin Ringo led off the fifth with a double and scored on a two-out single by Michael Schulze to get the Chiefs on the board.
Beloit took advantage of a Chiefs error on a double play ball in the sixth and eventually added three more runs for an 11-1 lead. Ryan Mathews singled home the first run, Justin Higley singled home the second and Mercedes delivered a sacrifice fly.
The Chiefs scored three runs off Sam Bragg in the eighth. Schulze singled to start the inning and moved to third on a Vaughn Bryan double. C.J. McElroy Jr. singled home Schulze and Bryan scored on a single by Juan Herrera. With one out, McElroy scored on an unconventional double play off the bat of Ringo for the final run of the game.
McKnight (5-8) allowed a career-high seven runs on seven hits and two walks over three innings while striking out one. Herget allowed one run in two innings of work and Lucas gave up three runs, two earned, on four hits in his inning. Robert Stock kept the Snappers off the board over the final two innings.
