Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, Ill--- Threats of rain didn't stop the Cougars from squeezing in their fourth straight win with a 6-1 victory in 6 1/2 innings at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark on Sunday.
For the first time this series, the Captains took the first lead of the game on Grant Fink's RBI single to bring home Cody Ferrell for a 1-0 Lake County advantage.
Once again the Cougars answered in the first frame and took advantage of some Lake County mistakes. Ben Carhart singled with two outs to keep the inning alive. Yasiel Balaguert reached on an error and Carhart moved to third on the play. A passed ball allowed Carhart to score and advanced Balaguert to second. After Jacob Rogers reached on a walk, two wild pitches and two passed balls sent home Balaguert and Rogers home for a 3-1 lead.
The wet conditions may have come in to play in the bottom of the fourth inning when Cody Ferrell tried to catch Daniel Lockhart's fly ball to center, but the ball popped out of his glove. Trey Martin sent Lockhart home with a single to make it 4-1 Cougars.
The offense continued in the fifth inning as Carhart and Balaguert quickly became base runners. Danny Canela singled to bring home Carhart and Lockhart followed with an RBI single of his own. After fiving innings the Cougars led 6-1.
It was officially decided to end the game after the top of the seventh inning, with more rain expected in the forecast.
Justin Amlung (2-0) pitched four scoreless innings allowing just two hits and striking out five batters. Mitch Brown (0-1) suffered the loss after allowing three unearned runs in the first.
The Cougars now hit the road for a six-game trip away from home. Monday's contest will be played against the Bowling Green Hot Rods at Bowling Green Ballpark. Jen-Ho Tseng is scheduled to pitch for the Cougars. The Hot Rods' pitcher has yet to be announced. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. with full coverage of 1280 WBIG and kccougars.com.
