Kernels top Lugs, 6-2, completing sweep

LANSING, Mich. - The Cedar Rapids Kernels (7-3) finished off a three-game sweep of the Lansing Lugnuts (3-7) with a 6-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Cooley Law School Stadium.

The loss extended a four-game losing streak for the Lugnuts and closed out the first home stand of the 2014 season.

Cedar Rapids jumped on starting pitcher Tom Robson (Loss, 0-1) with a two-run single by catcher Mitch Garver in the first inning.

Lansing's D.J. Davis drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the third, but the Kernels stretched the lead to three with RBI singles in the fourth inning by Zach Larson and Chad Christensen and never looked back.

Cedar Rapids starter Felix Jorge (Win, 1-1) allowed the Lugnuts just one more run in his five innings of work, an RBI sacrifice bunt by Ian Parmley.

Kernels first baseman Bryan Haar hit his third home run of the season in the fifth inning to push the lead to 5-2.

The visitors closed out the scoring on a Christensen triple and a Jimmy Cordero wild pitch in the eighth.

Lansing center fielder Davis went 2-for-3 for the afternoon with his fifth RBI and third stolen base of the season.

The Lugnuts now head to Appleton, Wisc. to open a three-game series with Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Monday. Lansing will send lefty Jairo Labourt (0-0, 4.26 ERA) to the mound to face Wisconsin right-hander Taylor Williams (1-0, 0.00 ERA), with first pitch slated for 7:35 p.m.

The next Lugnuts home game is scheduled for Monday, April 21st, against the Lake County Captains, opening a seven-game homestand.
