Kernels Complete Sweep with 6-2 Win

LANSING, MI - The Cedar Rapids Kernels beat the Lansing Lugnuts 6-2 at Cooley Law School Stadium on Sunday afternoon to complete a three-game sweep and extend their winning streak to five games.

The Kernels took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning when Mitch Garver singled into center field, scoring Tanner Vavra and Zack Larson. Garver now has a team-high eight runs batted in on the season. Vavra extended his hit streak to five games by singling into center while Larson collected his team-high sixth double of the season off the right field wall.

Cedar Rapids extended their lead to 4-0 in the third inning with RBI singles from Larson and Chad Christensen. Jason Kanzler was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Larson later singled home Kanzler to put the Kernels up by three runs. Larson stole second base and came home on Christensen's RBI single into right-center. Christensen's single extended his hit streak to six games.

Lansing cut the Kernels lead to 4-1 when Ian Parmley scored on a RBI sacrifice fly by D.J. Davis.

Bryan Haar hit his third home run of the season in the fifth inning. His shot went the opposite way to right field and extended the Kernels lead to 5-1. The Lugnuts tallied a run in the bottom of the fifth inning when Carlos Ramirez doubled and later scored on a sacrifice bunt by Parmley, making the score 5-2.

The Kernels scored the final run in the eighth inning when Christensen tripled to deep center and came home on a wild pitch, making the score 6-2.

Felix Jorge (1-1) started and picked up the win by going five innings. He allowed two runs and three hits while striking out three and walking one. Once again, the Kernels bullpen was terrific as they combined to throw four innings with no runs and two hits allowed. Yorman Landa went one inning, striking out one. Alex Muren went two innings, striking out one. Christian Powell finished the game by pitching the ninth inning.

Jeremias Pineda singled in the game to extend his hit streak to six games.

Tom Robson (0-1) took the loss for the Lugnuts as he went four innings and allowed four runs on six hits.

The Kernels return home tomorrow night, opening up a six-game home stand against South Bend and West Michigan. Tomorrow's game v. South Bend begins at 6:35 p.m. and is the first Dollar Monday of the season. Regular hot dogs, small popcorn, ice cream sandwiches, chips, and Cracker Jacks are each just $1 on Monday home games!

The Kernels will send RHP Aaron Slegers (1-0, 2.45) to the mound against South Bend tomorrow night.
