Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL – The Kane County Cougars were shutout by the Swing of the Quad Cites 3 – 0, Friday night at Elfstrom Stadium. Quad Cities pitcher Nick Blackburn only allowed five hits in the first complete game shutout for the club in almost three years.

The Swing broke a scoreless tie in the top of the third inning scoring two runs on four hits, with the help of a Cougar infield error to take a 2 – 0 lead.

Cougars starting pitcher Steve Bondurant was lifted with two outs in the top of the seventh as Dan Fyvie came in from the bullpen for the final out of the frame. Bondurant was handed the hard-luck loss allowing only one earned run on seven hits in 6.2 innings pitched to drop his record to 11 – 5.

The Swing (44-38) added an insurance run in the top of the eighth inning on a solo home run from Justin Arneson, his second of the year, to take a 3 – 0 lead going into the ninth inning.

The Cougars (52 – 33) tried to mount a rally with a one –out walk by Luke Appert, but Blackburn got two fly outs to end the game. Blackburn tossed the first complete game shutout for the Swing since August of 2001 and has not allowed an earned run in 23 consecutive innings. The Cougars did not have multiple base runners in any of the nine innings as Blackburn allowed only one walk in the gem, raising his record to 5 - 4.

The Cougars will look to end the four game losing skid to the Swing on Saturday in a 6:00 p.m. game. The league leader in strikeouts and All-Star Brad Knox will take the mound for Kane County while right-hander Chris Schutt goes for the Quad Cities.
