Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH – Jon Kaplan loves hitting against the Dayton Dragons (5-10, 32-53). The South Bend Silver Hawks (7-8, 49-36) outfielder homered for the third time off Dragons pitching in the last two games, a 6-1 final in front of 8,167 at Fifth Third Field on Friday night. Chris Kinsey (W, 6-6) notched the victory for the Hawks, while Dragons right hander Kyle Edens (L, 0-1) suffered his first loss of the season since getting reassigned to Dayton.

Kaplan hit his eighth homer of the season off of Edens in the third inning to give South Bend a 2-0 lead. Half of Kaplan's eight home runs on the 2004 season have come off Dayton pitching, including three in the last two nights. The outfielder has picked up 12 RBI in 11 games against the Dragons this season and is hitting .353 against Dayton pitching.

Kinsey scattered five hits in his 6.1 innings of work allowing the Dragons just one run before departing in the seventh inning. In the home half of the fourth inning, the Dragons put their only run on the score board. Walter Olmstead was hit by a Kinsey offering to lead off the inning and following a walk to Ben Himes and a bunt single by Cody Strait, Dayton loaded the bases with none down. Kyle Smith's SAC fly scored the only Dayton run of the night as Kinsey buckled down and avoided further trouble.

Brian Rose led off the Silver Hawk eighth with his seventh HR of the season, a solo shot off reliever Justin Mallett (ND). With one down, Kaplan reached base on an error by Olmstead, advanced to second on a throwing error by Dayton catcher Miguel Perez. Himes bobbled the ball in right field, allowing Kaplan to move to third base on the play. Back-to-back walks by Mallet loaded the bases for pinch hitter Jeff Cook who delivered a two RBI single to left field, scoring Kaplan and Emilio Bonafacio and extending the lead to 5-1. The Silver Hawks would add on one more in the ninth off Brock Till (ND) to win it by the final score of 6-1.

The Dragons will host the Silver Hawks in game three of the four game series on Saturday Night at Fifth Third Field. 1410 ESPN Radio will have live coverage beginning with the pre game show at 6:30 PM. The Dragons will send LHP Jan Granado (0-0) to the hill; South Bend will counter with RHP Chad Scarbery (8-7).
