Kaaihue 9th Inning Homer Lifts Bees
July 9, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Burlington Bees News Release
Lansing, MI - With two on and two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Kila Kaaihue connected on a three-run homer to left field off of Lansing closer Adalberto Mendez to lift the Burlington Bees (9-6, 31-54) to a 3-1 victory over the Lugnuts (7-9, 45-41) at Oldsmobile Park tonight. The homer was Kaaihue's eighth of the year, tying him with Chris Lubanski for the team lead. The Bees' win evens this series at one.
The Bees had been shut down before the homer. Lugnuts' starter Robert Ransom set season highs with seven innings pitched and four strikeouts while allowing five hits and walking none. Juan Mateo pitched a scoreless eighth before Mendez (4-6) came in for the ninth. Mendez got Lubanski to fly out to start the inning, but walked Brett Groves and gave up a single to Mitch Maier to put two runners on base. Kenard Springer popped out for the second out before Kaaihue hit a 1-0 pitch out of the ballpark.
Bees' starter John Gragg allowed one run on five hits in 6.2 innings. Alberto Garcia led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run for the Lugnuts only tally. Gragg allowed five hits and walked a season-high five while striking out six. Gragg turned the ball over to Nate Moore with two on and two outs in the bottom of the seventh to face Brian Dopirak. Moore got Dopirak to popout to second to end the inning and ended the slugger's 27-game hitting streak. Moore (1-0) finished the final 2.1 innings and allowed two hits while striking out three for his first professional win. It was a career-high for innings and strikeouts in a short career that has been just six outings combined between Arizona and the Bees so far.
The Bees and Lugnuts continue this series tomorrow night at 6:05 Central time. RH Ambiorix Burgos (1-8, 5.58) will pitch for the Bees against LH Justin Jones (3-2, 3.62) for the Lugnuts. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 5:45.
