Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL- Kane County Cougars outfielder Nick Blasi led off the bottom of the first inning of Monday night's game against the Peoria Chiefs with a solo home run, and the Cougars never stopped afterward. They crushed a season-high 25 hits and cruised for a commanding 21-2 win. Tony Evans improved his record to 5-0 and tossed the Cougars' first complete game of the season. Blasi and Javier Herrera each had a homer and five RBI, and every Kane County starter had at least two hits and scored a tally. After Blasi's solo shot off Chiefs starter Grant Johnson made it 1-0, Kane County scored five more in the second. Jose Pineda and Eddie Kim doubled, followed by another two-bagger from Ryan Ruiz to bring in two for a 3-0 score. After Gregorio Petit walked, Blasi singled to plate Ruiz, and Herrera nailed a two-run hit for 6-0 affair. Johnson left after two innings, giving up six runs on as many hits, but Kane County continued to pound reliever Mike Jones, sending 10 men to the plate in the third for six more runs. Kim, Ruiz, Petit, Blasi, Cliff Pennington and Herrera all drove in a teammate to make it 12-0. Blasi's fourth RBI came from a single in a three-run fourth. Evans mowed through the Chiefs order through six innings, retiring 11 consecutive batters before giving up a home run to Ryan Harvey in the seventh. Herrera answered that with a solo connection of his own for a 16-1 game. Peoria scored its final run in the eighth for an 18-2 contest. Kane County sent five players past home plate in the eighth, forcing the Chiefs to have third baseman Aaron Smith to take the mound as a pitcher. Raul Padron and Myron Leslie got into the run-producing act to support the eventual 21-2 final. Evans (5-0) gave up two runs on four hits, walked three and fanned six to stay perfect. Johnson (1-2) took the loss. Game two of the series is Tuesday at noon CDT. Trent Peterson, who returned to the Cougars in a roster move Monday, will take the mound for the Cougars (6-6) against left-hander Chris Shaver of Peoria (6-6).
