Peoria Chiefs News Release

Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars lineup provided plenty of July 4th fireworks for the crowd at Elfstrom Stadium and dealt the Peoria Chiefs their worst loss in franchise history, 21-2. With the loss the Chiefs fall back to .500 at 6-6 on the half and 41-41 overall. The 21 runs allowed and 25 hits allowed were the most given up by the Chiefs in 2005.

The Cougars started off with a solo home run from Nick Blasi to lead off the bottom of the 1st and never looked back. In the 2nd, Chiefs starter Grant Johnson allowed five runs on five hits and was removed after the second trailing 6-0.

Kane County scored six more times against reliever Mike Jones in the 3rd inning and added two more against Jones in the 4th before Walt Nolen relieved for the Chiefs. Nolen allowed one run in the 4th before blanking the Cougars in the 5th and 6th.

Trailing 15-0 heading into the 7th, the Chiefs finally got on the board when Ryan Harvey led off with a solo homer against Tony Evans. The homer was Harvey's 11th of the season and just the second hit of the night for the Chiefs.

Javier Herrera homered for the Cougars to lead off the 7th against newcomer Victor Ramos and the Cougars added five more against Tim Layden in the 8th. Third baseman Aaron Smith moved to the mound with the bases loaded and nobody out in the 8th and retired two of the three Cougars he faced for a scoreless inning.

Johnson (1-2) took the loss allowing six runs on six hits in two innings. He struck out three and walked one. Tony Evans (5-0) picked up a complete game win for the Cougars allowing two runs on four hits over nine innings while striking out six. Pepsi Players of the Game
