West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK - For the second time this season, Quad Cities right hander Dennis Dove pitched seven innings against the Whitecaps with no runs allowed as the Swing hammered West Michigan, 8-1. The loss ends a six game winning streak for the Whitecaps. Dove allowed one unearned run in a victory June 5 at Fifth Third Ballpark. He threw seven shutout innings Monday night. Jair Jurrjens started against Dove for a second time and allowed just one run over five innings, but Freddy Dolsi was touched for seven runs over the next 2.1 innings as Quad Cities exploded for six runs in the seventh. The last four runs scored on consecutive pitches: A two-run double by Rick Ankiel and the a towering home run to right field by Eric Verbryke, which was nearly reached the Mississippi River on the fly. The blast by Verbryke made the lead 8-0. West Michigan broke up the shutout thanks to back-to-back errors, which started the top of the eighth. Nick McIntyre drove in the run with a double. P. J. Finigan was perfect over the final 1.1 innings on the mound for the Whitecaps. He was the only West Michigan pitcher to retire the Swing in order.
Michigander vs. West Michigan: RHP Jason Cairns made his Midwest League debut for Quad Cities against the Whitecaps Monday. Cairns pitched the eighth inning and allowed one run on one hit with no walks and a strikeout. He is a Traverse City native who played at Central Michigan University and was drafted in the 8th round last month by St. Louis.
Pushed Back: RHP Matt Scherer, who was originally scheduled to pitch Tuesday's game for Quad Citites will not throw until Wednesday because of a prior spider bite. He lost his medication on a road trip, but will be ready for Wednesday's game. Instead, RHP Quinton Roberston (1-1, 5.40 ERA) will get the nod for the Swing on Tuesday against Whitecaps RHP Josh Rainwater (1-3, 4.17 ERA). First Pitch is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. Michigan time.
