Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva IL - The Kane County Cougars managed only two hits Saturday afternoon against the Swing of the Quad Cities and lost 4-0 in front of 2,068 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Mike Massaro reached base three times, and Ron Madej and John Herrera provided solid relief pitching in the defeat.

Cougars starter Jeff Gray was perfect through two innings but allowed a run in the third after he walked two batters and committed an error. The Swing tacked on three more tallies in the fourth, capped by a run-scoring triple from Randy Roth. Gray left the game after 3 1/3 innings, allowing four runs on three hits and walking and striking out three. Madej tossed 3 2/3 innings and Herrera pitched the final two frames to provide the scoreless relief, but the Cougars' offense never mustered enough production. Swing starter Mark McCormick lasted six innings, gave up a single to Massaro, walked four and fanned seven. Three Quad Cities relievers worked the final three innings. The Cougars had at least one base runner in seven of the nine innings but failed to capitalize on the opportunities.

Gray (0-1) suffered the loss for the Cougars (2-1), McCormick (1-0) notched the win for the Swing (1-2) and Scott Vander Weg grabbed his first save. The finale of the four-game series is Sunday afternoon at 2 CDT. Craig Italiano will start for the Cougars against left-hander Adam Daniels.
