Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, OH - The Dayton Dragons (1-2) got into the win column for the first time in 2006, doubling up the South Bend Silver Hawks (2-1) 6-3 in front of 8,101 at Fifth Third Field on Saturday night. The Dragons combined great hitting from the bottom four in the batting order and stellar starting pitching from Philippe Valiquette (WP, 1-0) to pick up the first win of the season, snapping a two game losing streak.

The Dragons got on the board in the bottom of the second inning with a single run off Silver Hawk starter Ramon Sanchez (LP, 0-1). The right hander issued back-to-back walks before throwing what appeared to be an inning ending double play ground ball. Shortstop Pedro Ciriaco forced the lead runner at second before throwing wildly to first, allowing Bobby Mosby to cross the plate with the first run of the game and a 1-0 Dayton lead.

Mike DeJesus dented the dish in the bottom half of the second inning scoring on a Sanchez wild pitch for a 2-0 Dragons advantage. The second baseman led off the inning with a single and moved up on a Mike Griffin base hit and a Josh Holden grounder. Griffin, who moved to third on the wild pitch that scored DeJesus, came home on Jay Bruce's first RBI hit; a single to right and the Dragons led 3-0.

The Silver Hawks picked up an unearned run off Valiquette in the fourth cut the lead to 3-1. That was the lone run the Dragons starter allowed in 5.0 innings of work. Valiquette scattered three hits and struck out and walked two to earn the win.

The Dragons closed out their scoring with a pair in the sixth off Sanchez, on Eric Eymann's RBI double and a single by DeJesus through a drawn in infield. Sanchez also pitched 5.0 innings surrendering six runs (five earned) on seven hits. The right hander struck out three, walked three and threw one wild pitch.

The Dayton bullpen which lost an 8-3 lead on Friday, held firm on Saturday. Jon George (ND) was touched up for two runs in the top of the seventh, the second of two innings he tossed. Brandon Camardese (ND) was perfect in the eighth and Zac Stott (SV, 1) blanked South Bend in the ninth inning to earn the first Dragons save of 2006.

The Dragons and Silver Hawks wrap up the four game series on Sunday afternoon at Fifth Third Field. ESPN Radio 1410 Wing AM will carry the game live beginning with the pre game show at 1:30 PM, with the first pitch is scheduled for 2:00 PM. RHP Zach Ward makes his professional debut with the start for Dayton, while South Bend will counter with RHP Cody Evans.
