
Garcia's arm, Maybin's bat key Whitecaps' first win

FORT WAYNE, IN - Following a lead off single in the first, Ramon Garcia retired 12 Fort Wayne batters in a row to set the tone for a 4-1 Whitecaps victory over the Wizards.
Garcia pitched five innings and struck out six with no walks. He allowed two hits and the Wizards' only run of the day in the fifth inning on his way to the win.
Cameron Maybin came through with timely hitting for the âCaps as he pulled a two-run double down the left field line to put West Michigan on the board in the third inning.
Maybin doubled down the right field line with one out in the ninth then scored when clean up hitter Matt Joyce doubled off the right-centerfield wall. It was the first hit of the season for Joyce, but his fourth RBI.
Joyce also drove in a run on ground ball in the fifth inning as Will Rhymes scored for the second tie in the game.
Matt Rusch pitched two innings of relief for the Whitecaps and was followed by Anthony Claggett and Orlando Perdomo, who each pitched in one inning on the hill. Perdomo recorded the save.
Grant Varnell suffered the loss. He started for Fort Wayne and pitched the first five innings, but allowed seven of the Whitecaps 13 hits.
West Michigan left 11 runners on base. The Whitecaps have tallied 22 in their first two games of the season.
