Kane County Cougars News Release
DAVENPORT, Iowa - The Kane County Cougars started an eight-game road trip Monday night with an 8-5 loss against the Quad Cities River Bandits in front of 4,523 at Modern Woodmen Park. The Cougars never led in the game and lost the opener of a road series for just the second time in 11 tries.
Starter Scott Mitchinson (5-3), making his first outing in two weeks after arm soreness, gave up three runs on five hits over 3 2/3 innings in the loss, and reliever Chad Kerfoot yielded four more in three frames.
The Cougars trailed 5-0 and didn't have a hit through five innings against Richard Castillo (1-0) before they battled back against the Bandits bullpen. Corey Brown and Todd Johnson nailed back-to-back RBI singles to make it 5-2, but Quad Cities got two in the bottom half to counter. Then Larry Cobb connected for a sacrifice fly in the eighth for a 7-3 game, but Nick Walters got touched for an unearned run to offset it. The final runs came in the Cougars half of the ninth. Justin Frash scored on a wild pitch, and Greg Dowling notched a pinch-hit RBI single.
The Cougars (3-2) and River Bandits (2-3) continue their four-game series Tuesday afternoon at 1 CT when Scott Hodsdon (3-5, 3.53) faces Nick Additon (5-2, 2.27).
