
Kernels take series finale from River Bandits, 10-3

June 22, 2008 - The Cedar Rapids Kernels took the final game of a four game series with the Quad Cities River Bandits by the score of 10-3, in front of 2,325 fans at Dale and Thomas Popcorn Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Julio Perez hit a 3-run home run into the batter's eye in deep center field and had 4 RBI in the game, and Jay Brossman was 3 for 4 with an RBI.
Kernels starter Robert Fish (6-2) allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings for the win. Jordon Towns came on with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning to shut down a Quad Cities rally and earn his second save.
The Kernels pounded out 10 hits and set a new season high by drawing nine walks off Quad Cities pitching. Ryan Groth was 2 for 3 with two doubles and three runs scored and Tyler Johnson was 2 for 5 with an RBI.
Quad Cities starter Mark Diapoules (4-1) allowed five runs on six hits and walked three over four innings for the loss. Paul Vazquez hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and Ross Oeder added an RBI. Pete Kozma, Matt Arburr and Domnit Bolivar each had two hits for the River Bandits.
With the win, the Kernels improve to 3-1 in the second half and 35-37 overall. Quad Cities falls to 1-3 and 34-34.
The Kernels now welcome the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers and start a four game series on Monday night at 7 pm. It's a Mix 96.5 Belly Buster Monday: enjoy all you can eat hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and peanuts for $7, plus the cost of a ticket. Gates open at 6 pm.
