Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that RHP Julio Castillo has been added to the Chiefs roster from the Dominican Cubs in Boca Chica, Dominican Republic. He will be taking the roster spot that was left vacant when Dustin Sasser was promoted to High-A Daytona on Friday. Castillo will join the Chiefs in Burlington as they open up a four-game commuter series with the Bees tonight at 7:00 PM.
Castillo, who was signed as a free agent in 2004 by the Cubs, joins the Chiefs roster for the second time. He began the season with Peoria last April where he appeared seven times as a reliever but did not factor in a decision. He pitched 8 2/3 innings and struggled with his command by walking 15 batters with only two strikeouts. After leaving the Chiefs in April, he next pitched in June in the Arizona Rookie League where he made two appearances before joining the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League on July 2. With the Hawks, Castillo made seven starts while posting a 0-4 record with a 5.48 ERA. He pitched 23 innings while walking 15 and striking out 12 with Boise. He was then sent back to the AZL on August 16 where he made three more appearances for the AZL Cubs. Overall, he posted a 1-0 record in six outings, three of which were as a starter, with a 1.89 ERA in Mesa in 2007. The right-hander also pitched in Mesa during the 2005 campaign where he made seven appearances and posting a 1-1 record with a 5.57 ERA.
Thus far in 2008, the 20-year-old Castillo has been pitching with the Dominican Cubs as a part of the Dominican Summer League. In his four starts, totaling 18 innings, he had not allowed a run while striking out 13, and walking five, and going 1-0. He last pitched on June 19 against the DSL Orioles where he worked five innings allowing just two hits and striking out four. The opposition was hitting just .111 off the right-hander before the promotion.
The Chiefs return home on Friday night, June 27 to take on in-state rival Kane County at 7:00 PM. The first 2,000 fans through the gates will receive a Mark Grace t-shirt which is the second t-shirt giveaway this season presented by Hardees. BirdZerk will also be at O'Brien Field for his second performance of the season. He will provide classic skits on the field during the game as well as sign autographs on the concourse.
