Dayton Dragons News Release

Dayton, Ohio-The South Bend Silver Hawks built a 5-0 lead over the first three innings and held off a comeback bid by the Dayton Dragons on Monday night, defeating the Dragons 6-4 in the first game of the series. After trailing by five runs as late as the sixth inning, the Dragons put the tying run on base in the bottom of the ninth but came up short to fall to 3-2 in the second half.

Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Guerrero suffered an unpleasant return to the club that he made 30 starts for over the last two seasons. Guerrero lasted just two and two-thirds innings, allowing nine hits and five runs with no walks and a strikeout to suffer the loss.

A two-out, run-scoring single by Dayton's Denis Phipps in the third inning got the Dragons on the board after South Bend had built a 5-0 lead. But South Bend scored one run in the fifth to again lead by five at 6-1.

Brandon Waring led off the Dayton sixth inning with a home run to left field, his 14th homer of the year. One batter later, Brandon Menchaca tripled to right and scored on Devin Mesoraco's ground out to make it 6-3.

In the seventh, Keltavious Jones tripled for Dayton to start the inning and scored on Logan Parker's ground out to make it 6-4.

After being retired in order in the eighth, the Dragons threatened in the bottom of the ninth. Justin Reed doubled with one out and with two out, Zack Cozart singled to put the tying run on base. But Parker grounded out to second to end the game.

The Dragons finished with nine hits. Jones and Waring each had two. Cozart and Waring each extended hitting streaks to nine games apiece.

The Dragons host the Silver Hawks again on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. Kyle Lotzkar (0-1, 9.00) will start for Dayton.
