Kane County Cougars News Release
Burlington, IA- The Kane County Cougars managed just two runs on five hits Thursday night against the Burlington Bees, losing the opener of a four-game series and eight-game road trip 8-2 at Community Field.
Luis Perez gave the Cougars a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning with a one-out homer off Bees starter Justin Sherman. Perez now has a nine-game hitting streak and has hit safely in 14 of is 15 games this season with Kane County. That advantage held through three innings as Cougars starter Tony Evans was blanking the Bees, but Rusty Brown homered to start the last of the fourth to it 1-1. Evans later served up a three-run shot for a deficit the Cougars could not overcome. Burlington added three tallies in the fifth to chase Evans and produce a 7-1 game. The Cougars scored in the seventh against reliever Kyle Crist when David Castillo's sacrifice fly brought in Myron Leslie to cut it to 7-2. After J.R. Pickens replaced Evans and tossed 2 2/3 innings of perfect relief, Shawn Martinez allowed a home run for the 8-2 final.
Evans (5-2) suffered the defeat, and Sherman (3-3) took home the win. Game two of the series is Friday night at 7 CDT. Southpaw Trent Peterson (1-1, 5.40) toes the rubber for the Cougars (15-12) against right-hander Patrick Hicklen (5-4, 4.04) for the Bees (16-11), who have won seven straight games.
