Burlington Bees News Release

Burlington, IA (July 21, 2005) - The Burlington Bees (16-11, 50-47) matched a season-high with three home runs and extended their winning streak to seven in a row with an 8-2 win over the Kane County Cougars at Community Field tonight. The Bees now sit on their own in second place in the Midwest League's Western Division and just one game behind the Swing of the Quad Cities for first.

Kane County got on the board first on a solo home run by Luis Perez in the top of the first inning. That was the only run, and one of only three hits, allowed by Bees' starter Justin Sherman (3-3) through six innings. Sherman has won consecutive starts and is the only pitcher to get more than one win during this streak so far.

The Bees broke through against Cougars' starter Tony Evans in the fourth. Rusty Brown led off with a solo home run to left to tie the game. Brown leads the team with 13 home runs and 57 RBI. With one out, Geraldo Valentin and Kenard Springer singled to put runners on the corners for Darwinson Salazar. Salazar smashed a three-run homer to left to put the Bees on top 4-1. It was Salazar's second homer of the year. His first came May 8th at Cedar Rapids. The Bees tacked on three more to knock Evans (5-2) out in the fifth. Damaso Espino led off with a single and then Brown and Brian McFall were both hit by a pitch to load the bases. Valentin drove in Espino with a groundout to second. Springer knocked in Brown and McFall with a single to center. Springer tied a season-high with three hits and extended his hitting streak to 16.

After the Springer single, JR Pickens took over for Evans and retired all eight batters he faced in relief. Shawn Martinez pitched the eighth inning and surrendered a solo home run to Felipe Del Rosario for the Bees' final run. The shot was Del Rosario's first of the season.

Kyle Crist pitched two innings in relief of Sherman and allowed a run on two hits. David Castillo drove in Myron Leslie with a sacrifice fly to left. Adam Rowe struck out two in a perfect ninth to finish the game.

The Bees will try for eight in a row tomorrow night at 7:00 at Community Field. RH Patrick Hicklen (5-4, 4.04) will start for the Bees against LH Trent Peterson (1-1, 5.40) for the Cougars. The gates will open at 6:00 for a TGI Bud Night and Cubs vs. Cardinals Rivalry Night. Fans will have a chance to win Cubs tickets from KCPS AM 1150 and Cardinals tickets from Golden Eagle Distributing. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 6:40.
