Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING- Ryan Klosterman's bases-loaded single in the bottom of the 10th inning scored Eric Nielsen with the game-winning run as the Lugnuts(49-47, 12-15) rallied from a 5-1 defecit in the eighth inning to force extra innings and then had to rally again in the bottom of the 10th to post a series opening win over the Peoria Chiefs(46-51, 11-16) in front of 7,712 fans at Oldsmobile Park.
The Lugnuts fell behind from the start as Sam Fuld hit Danny Core's fourth pitch of the night out of the park to right to give Peoria an early 1-0 lead, one that the Chiefs would stretch in the fourth. Eric Patterson led off with a triple and after Ryan Harvey was hit by a pitch, Jesse Schmidt collected an infield single to plate Patterson and send Harvey to second. A single by Bo Flowers plated Harvey and after a walk to Anthony Granato, Aaron Smith's RBI fielders choice gave Peoria a 4-0 lead. In all, Core went four innings and allowed four runs while striking out six to earn a no-decision.
After Juan Perez had retired the first two hitters in the fifth, Harvey connected for his 17th homer of the season, a solo shot that made it 5-0.
Chiefs starter Grant Johnson allowed the first Lugnuts hit in the bottom of the fifth when Klosterman doubled to right and one batter later Eugenio Velez singled to center to put the Lugnuts on the board at 5-1.
Johnson allowed just two hits in 5.2 innings of work, but his chance at a victory was thrown away in the eighth when the Chief bullpen imploded. Velez led off the inning with a single and after back-to-back walks to Jason Armstrong and Christian Snavely loaded the bases, former Lugnut Adalberto Mendez was asked to clean up Tim Layden's mess. Eric Nielsen's RBI groundout made it 5-2 and Charlie Anderson doubled in a pair behind the groundout to cut the lead to 5-4. Two batters later, David Hicks collected a single off Mendez to score Aaron Mathews and knot the score.
After both teams failed to score in the ninth, former Lugnut Drew Larsen belted the first pitch of the 10th from Scott Roy(3-3) out of the park to put Peoria ahead, 6-5. Roy recovered to retire the next three hitters and Lansing rallied one last time in the bottom of the inning.
Snavely scorched a single past Patterson into right to start the inning off Drew Dickson (0-1). The umpires then called a balk on Dickson, sending Snavely to second. After Eric Nielsen was intentionally walked, a wild pitch sent Nielsen to second and pinch-runner Luke Hetherington to third with nobody out. Mathews then hit a sacfly to center to plate Hetherington to tie the score. After back-to-back intentional walks to Joey Reiman and Hicks, Klosterman made the Chiefs pay by ripping a single past Granato at short to give Lansing the win.
The Lugnuts and Chiefs will resume their four-game set with the second game tomorrow night at Oldsmobile Park. Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. as a pair of left handers will duel. Lansing sends A.J. Wideman to the hill while Peoria counters with Chris Shaver.
