CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels fell to the Kane County Cougars, 15-1, on Saturday night at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium. The Kernels have now lost three straight games. There are 8 games remaining in the first half, which ends June 16.

Jeimer Candelario led off Kane County's scoring in the top of the 2nd with a leadoff home run off of Kernels starter Brett Lee, but the offensive prowess began in the 3rd.

The Cougars pushed across 6 runs on 5 hits in a frame that included a solo home run from Gioskar Amaya and two 2-RBI doubles from Wilson Contreras and Oliver Zapata. Amaya, Albert Almora, Candelario, Rock Shoulders, Contreras, and Zapata all scored in the inning.

Dan Vogelbach increased the Cougars advantage to 8-0 with solo HR in the 4th before a 4-run performance in the 5th, pushing the lead to 12-0 A 3-run homer by Almora, his first of the season, highlighted the inning. Marco Hernandez also had an RBI single in the 5th.

The Kernels picked up their lone run in the 7th inning when Byron Buxton singled home Tyler Grimes.

Kane County added 3 runs in the 9th inning as they drew 4 walks, taking a 15-1 lead.

Almora finished the contest 4-for-5 and is now 10-for-22 against the Kernels this year. Five other Cougars starters recorded multi-hit games, including Oliver Zapata, who went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Lee (4-4) threw 4 innings, allowing 8 runs on 11 hits while walking 2 and striking out 2. Relievers Josue Montanez and Alex Muren combined for 2 scoreless innings. Muren hasn't allowed a run in his last 6 appearances. Kaleb Merck allowed 4 runs over 2 innings. Kernels catcher Jhonathan Arias pitched the 9th inning, allowing 3 runs on 1 hit and 4 walks.

Kane County starter Michael Heesch threw 6.1 innings, allowing just 1 run on 8 hits while walking 1 and striking out 3. Heesch (3-4) now leads the Cougars in quality starts with 6.

Byron Buxton and Tyler Grimes each had 3 hits against Heesch. Buxton went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Grimes finished 3-for-4 and is now hitting .424 over the last 11 games.
