CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - An 18-hit onslaught included a season-high four home runs as the Kane County Cougars whipped the Cedar Rapids Kernels, 15-1, on Saturday night at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Jeimer Candelario started the Cougars (28-31) off in the top of the second as he cracked a solo homer off starter Brett Lee (4-4). Lee gave up three more hits in the second but no more runs. That changed in the third when Gioskar Amaya went deep to start the frame, making it 2-0.

A single and two walks filled the bases for Willson Contreras, and his double brought home Albert Almora and Candelario to put the Cougars up by four. Oliver Zapata cleared what was left on the bases with another two-run double. Zapata scored on a Marco Hernandez base hit to cap a six-run third.

Lee stayed out for the fourth inning and coughed up another home run as Dan Vogelbach lifted off to right field. In the fifth inning, the Cougars greeted reliever Kaleb Merck with a four-spot. Hernandez doubled home Zapata while Almora blasted a three-run shot for his first home run in a Cougars' uniform.

Michael Heesch (3-4) took care of all the runs by holding the Kernels (37-23) to just one tally on eight singles in his 6.1 innings. Ian Dickson and Lendy Castillo finished the ballgame out of the bullpen without allowing a hit. The Cougars put together a three-run ninth inning for good measure as Almora's sac fly and Rock Shoulders's two-run double put the Cougars up by 14.

The Cougars and Kernels play game two of their three-game series on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 from Veterans Memorial Stadium. Right-hander Dillon Maples (0-1) starts for the Cougars against fellow righty Hudson Boyd (1-3). The Cougars return home on Tuesday night to take on the Burlington Bees at 6:30 from Fifth Third Bank Ballpark. For tickets, please call (630) 232-8811 or visit www.kccougars.com.
