Beloit Sky Carp News Release
BURLINGTON, IA - Daniel Robertson picked up two hits and drove in a pair as the Beloit Snappers coasted to a 6-1 victory over the Burlington Bees at Community Field in Midwest League action on Saturday night.
Beloit reaches a season-high eleven games over .500 at 36-25 and, combined with a loss by Quad Cities, they are now 1.5 games up in the fight for the Western Division wild card. Burlington sinks to 23-33.
The Snappers scored first on a second inning double by Ryan Mathews that plated Matt Olson. One inning later, Bruce Maxwell singled to score Dayton Alexander (2-3, 3 runs) for a 2-0 advantage. One more run was added in the fifth on Robertson's (2-5, 2 RBI) first hit of the night, an RBI double that knocked out Bees starter Pat Lowery (2-3).
After chipping away for single runs, Beloit's lineup put up a three spot in the sixth to double their lead. Olson struck the first blow with a bases empty blast, his eighth. Consecutive walks with one out followed by a fielder's choice gave Brett Vertigan a two-on, two-out opportunity and he cashed in with a single for one run. Robertson drove in the final run with another hit and the score was now 6-0.
The beneficiary of this run support was Seth Streich (6-3), but he hardly needed all of it. The righty tamed Burlington's bats through five-and-two-thirds innings, only giving up one run and striking out five. The run he allowed was on Kyle Johnson's (1-3, HR, RBI, run) second home run of the season in the sixth. The Bees didn't get a man into scoring position against Streich until that sixth inning. He also received two big assists from catcher Nick Rickles, who picked off two runners at first base.
Starting in the bottom of the sixth, the Snappers entrusted the game to their bullpen and the first man in was Tucker Healy. After he threw a scoreless inning-and-a-third, Stu Pudenz came in for the eighth and tossed a spotless frame. Tyler Vail put up another zero in the ninth, sealing the deal with a double play.
These two teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday, starting at 1:00pm. Beloit's RHP Vince Voiro (3-2, 3.00 ERA) and Burlington's RHP Reid Scoggins (1-3, 3.22 ERA) are the game one probables. The Snappers plan on sending out RHP Derek DeYoung (4-1, 2.64 ERA) in game two, while the Bees starter is TBD.
