
Kaleb Merck joins Kernels from Extended Spring Training

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announce that LHP David Hurlbut has been placed on the 7-day disabled list, retroactive to June 5, with a left lat strain and that RHP Kaleb Merck will join the Kernels from Extended Spring Training. Brad Steil, Director of Minor League Operations for the Twins, announced the move.
The Twins selected Merck in the 33rd round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Texas Christian University and he spent 2012 at Elizabethton. In 16 relief appearances he posted a 3-2 record and two saves with a 4.07 ERA. In 24.1 IP, he allowed 28 hits and 12 runs (11 earned) with six walks and 28 strikeouts.
Hurlbut has appeared in 16 games for the Kernels in 2013 making two starts. He has a 2-1 record, five saves and a 3.60 ERA. In 30 IP, he allowed 29 hits and 14 runs (12 earned) with seven walks and 21 strikeouts.
Merck will join the Kernels in Cedar Rapids and be active and available for tonight's 6:35 pm game with the Kane County Cougars. With today's transactions, the Kernels roster is at the MWL maximum of 25 active players, with three players currently on the disabled list.
The Kernels continue a six game home stand tonight at Perfect Game Field by hosting the Kane County Cougars at 6:35 pm. The upcoming home stand continues through Monday, June 10th.
