Battle Creek, MI - The number five has been the magic number for the Battle Creek Yankees (22-22) the last two games. Battle Creek won 5-3 on Sunday afternoon, and defeated the Kane County Cougars (28-17), 5-2 on Monday night at C.O. Brown Stadium. Once again, an Eastern Division starter dominated the Cougars. Ray Clark (1-1) scattered four hits on one run through eight innings in earning his first victory. Clark struck out six batters for the second straight start, and did not issue a walk. Jared Burton (2-1), who made his first start of the season, due to Shane Komine being promoted to Double-A, suffered the loss for Kane County. Burton's line showed five hits on four runs during a four-inning stint.
The Cougars managed a rally against reliever Matt Brumit in their final at-bat. Kory Wayment, John Baker, and Nelson Cruz began the ninth with singles. Jason Basil pushed across the Cougars' only run of the inning on a sacrifice fly; John Suomi flied out to left field- ending the game.
The Yankees put the game away in the fourth inning against Burton. Rudy Guillen's three-run home run (5th) gave the home team a 4-0 lead, and secured Guillen of delivering the game-winning hit. Nick Rogers blasted the first pitch of the sixth inning over the left field wall, giving the Cougars their first run of the night.
The Yankees broke the ice first, picking up a single run in the third inning.. Juan Camacho began the frame with a single, stole second base, and scored on Alexander Santa's two-out single.
Brigmer Leon pitched two scoreless innings in relief for Kane County, and Jairo Garcia allowed a run in two innings pitched for the Cougars.
The Cougars wrap up their series with the Battle Creek Yankees on Tuesday night from C.O. Brown Stadium-game time is 5:00 PM (CST). Bill Murphy LHP (2-3, 2.78) makes his 9th start of the season for the Cougars; Anderson Garcia RHP (1-2, 1.63) gets the starting nod for Battle Creek.
