CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa â Jerry Gil belted a grand slam, Kervin Jacobo a two-run home run and Jon Mark Sprowl had five hits to lead South Bend's 16-4 slaughter of the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Monday night before a paid crowd of 1,669 at New Veterans Memorial Stadium.
South Bend (17-25) set season highs for runs and hits (15). The 16 runs were the most scored against the Kernels this season. Every member of the Silverhawks' starting lineup scored.
The Kernels (21-23) lost for the eighth time in 10 games and the 13th time in their last 18 games. The Kernels fell two games below .500 for the first time since April 12, when they were 3-5. They avoided their largest margin of defeat when Caleb Maher laced a two-run double in the eighth inning to account for the final margin. The Kernels were beaten by Kane County, 13-0, on April 26.
South Bend's first five runs were unearned, thanks to a pair of Kernels errors.
South Bend scored a pair of unearned runs in the second inning. Alberto Callaspo's two-run triple in the Kernels' third inning tied the game, 2-2.
And then the roof caved in.
South Bend scored 13 runs over the next three innings and the rout was on ... and on ... and on.
Jacobo belted a two-run home run to highlight South Bend's three-run fourth inning that gave it a 5-2 lead.
The Silverhawks sent 10 men to the plate and used three hits, three bases on balls and an error to score four runs and took a 9-2 lead.
Gil's grand slam highlighted South Bend's six-run sixth inning. The Silverhawks sent 11 men to the plate in the inning.
South Bend scratched across an unearned run in the eighth inning that upped its lead to 16-2.
