Dragons Dial Long Distance, Pound Wizards 13-4

The Dragons (23-22) pounded out fifteen hits including three home runs to knock off the Eastern Division leading Wizards (26-18) 13-4 in front of 7,985 at Fifth Third Field Monday night.

Dayton Starting pitcher Camilo Vazquez (W, 1-1) picked up his first professional victory tossing 5.0 innings as he allowed just three hits striking out three and allowed three walks. Vazquez's outing started off slow as fell behind 1-0 in the top of the first inning, but would not yield another run in his remaining four innings of work.

Kennard Jones lead off the first with a single, then moved to second on a stolen base. Jones then advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a RBI ground out from Paul McAnulty. The Wizards took a 1-0 lead, but the lead would be short lived. Dayton came right back in the bottom of the inning to tie the game 1-1. B.J. Hawes reached on a two base error and scored on a single from Kevin Howard.

The Dragons picked up two more runs in the second to take the lead 3-1. Mark Schramek doubled to leadoff the inning moved to third on a Ryan Hanigan single and score on a Joey Votto single. Hanigan was plated on a groundout from Junior Ruiz to give the Dragons a lead they would not relinquish.

Howard belted his third homerun of the season in the fifth inning making the score 4-1 in favor of Dayton. Wizard starting pitcher David Pauley (L, 3-4) would be relieved in the sixth inning as he allowed four runs on seven hits striking out two and walking two.

The Wizard bullpen imploded as they allowed nine runs on eight hits on the evening. Dayton continued to play long ball as Brad Correll belted a three run shot in the sixth scoring Hanigan, who doubled to start the inning, and Votto who singled to make the score 7-1 Dayton after six innings.

Travis Wong got into the act in the seventh smashing a two run shot off of the scoreboard in left field. Wong chased home Howard who singled to lead off the inning. Votto singled and scored on two straight wild pitches after he moved to second on a Correll free pass. After seven innings Dayton had the lead 10-1.

In the eight inning Hawes started things off with a double. Howard and Wong reached base on back-to-back hit batsmen to load the bases. Schramek then doubled home Hawes and Howard before Votto closed out the scoring with a sacrifice fly pushing Wong home giving Dayton the 13-1 advantage.

Fort Wayne tried to come back in the ninth belting two homers of their own, but it was too little too late for the Wizards. Steve Baker hit a solo shot to lead off the inning and after a single from Steve Shirley picked up his fourth hit of the game Josh Tranum hit a two run shot to close out the scoring. Kyle Lucas (S, 1) retired the final three Wizards to pick up the save. Lucas tossed 4.0 innings scattering six hits and three runs striking out one out of the Dragon bullpen giving Dayton the 13-4 victory.

The Dragons and Fort Wayne Wizards conclude the four game series at Fifth Third Field Tuesday night at 7 PM. ESPN Radio 1410 WING AM will carry the game live with the pre game show beginning at 6:30 pm. LHP Juan Frias will make the start for the Dragons while Fort Wayne will counter with LHP John Richards.
