PRINCE GEORGE, BC - The Prince George Cougars faced off against the Spokane Chiefs in a thrilling match at the CN Centre, ultimately resulting in a 5-4 overtime victory for the Chiefs.
Zac Funk played a pivotal role for the Cougars, amassing three points during the game and reaching an impressive total of 58 goals for the season. Funk opened the scoring for the Cougars on the power-play at 9:57, courtesy of a well-executed setup from Terik Parascak and Hudson Thornton.
However, the Spokane Chiefs quickly responded with three goals of their own in the first period. Chase Harrington, a native of Prince George, found the back of the net at 11:04. Ty Chevaldayoff then added a short-handed goal at 12:02, followed by Saige Weinstein extending the lead to 3-1 for Spokane by the end of the first period.
Spokane continued their offensive prowess in the second period, with Shea Van Olm capitalizing on a breakaway opportunity to extend the lead to 4-1.
Undeterred, the Prince George Cougars mounted a remarkable comeback in the third period. Zac Funk notched his 58th goal of the season, kickstarting the Cougars' resurgence. Viliam Kmec then fired a shot past goaltender Dawson Cowan at 7:33, narrowing the gap to 4-3. The Cougars' momentum culminated in Hunter Laing's power-play goal at 11:07, levelling the score at four apiece and forcing the game into overtime.
In the extra period, Brayden Crampton of the Spokane Chiefs seized the moment, capitalizing on a 2-on-1 opportunity to secure the 5-4 overtime victory for his team.
Despite the Cougars' valiant effort, the Chiefs emerged victorious in a thrilling contest that showcased the intensity and unpredictability of hockey at its finest.
