Kamloops, BC - The Victoria Royals snapped their 10-game losing streak with a 2-1 overtime win over the Prince George Cougars at the Sandman Centre on Friday.
Brayden Schuurman scored the game-winner three-minutes into overtime as the Royals (2-13-1-0) picked up just their second win in 16 games. Both of their wins have come in overtime and both against the Cougars (6-7-2-1)
"We didn't set the tone in the first period, we weren't ready. We regrouped, started generating scoring chances and battled back to get the point. Going forward, we need to be ready at the start," said General Manager & Head Coach Mark Lamb."
Prince George trailed 1-0 through 20-minutes as the Royals Brandon Cutler scored on the power-play with just over two-minutes left in the opening frame. The score remained 1-0 until the third period when the Cougars equalized.
Tyson Upper scored the Cougars (6-7-2-1) only goal, eight-minutes into the third period that leveled the game 1-1. Upper batted in a bouncing puck at the side of the net for his second goal in as many games.
16-year-old Ty Young, made just his second career start and was sharp, as he stopped 21 of 23 shots. He was the game's third star.
Young's performance didn't go unnoticed by his coach, "He was excellent. I thought he was good the whole night. He looks like he can be a real good goaltender for us and it's too bad we couldn't get the win for him," said Lamb.
The Cougars power-play went 0-2 and the penalty-kill was 4-5.
The story for the Royals was 20-year-old Adam Evanoff. He earned his first win of the season after he stopped 40 of 41 shots, including 15 in the third period. He was the game's first star.
The Cougars are now 3-0-2-0 against the Royals in five games this season. The two teams wrap up their six-game series on May 8th at Prospera Place in Kelowna. With the single point earned, the Cougars sit in fourth place in the B.C. Division standings, one point back of the Kelowna Rockets.
Prince George played with just 11 forwards due to juries and suspension. Brendan Boyle and Kyren Gronick were out with upper-body injuries and Jonny Hooker is serving a "To Be Determined" suspension.
The Cougars next game is on Sunday against the Vancouver Giants (9-7-0-0) at the Sandman Centre; the puck drops at 6:00 pm.
