Kane County Cougars News Release
BOWLING GREEN, Ky.-Stifled on a season-low two base hits, the Kane County Cougars were defeated in the opener of a three-game series by the Bowling Green Hot Rods in a 5-0 contest on Wednesday night at Bowling Green Ballpark.
Alejandro Segovia started the scoring for the Hot Rods (53-42, 15-10) in the bottom of the third as he blasted his 10th home run of the season against Kellen Moen (3-7) to lead off the inning. Moen lasted five-plus frames while surrendering just four hits. He did give up one more run in the sixth on an RBI single from Jake Hager to score Ryan Brett.
Jason Mitchell replaced Moen in the sixth and coughed up a two-out double to Todd Glaesmann before Jeff Malm ripped a two-run dinger, his 11th homer of the year. Mitchell only worked one inning before giving way to Andrew Triggs, who pitched the final two. Triggs allowed an unearned run in the eighth as Hager reached on a Jack Lopez error before scoring on a single from Drew Vettleson.
Jake Floethe (9-1) got the start for the Hot Rods and limited the Cougars (48-47, 14-11) to just one hit in his five innings of work. Floethe walked three and struck out just one but kept the Cougars off the board as did Jason McEachern in his three relief innings. Stayton Thomas fired up a zero in the ninth inning to preserve the shutout as the Cougars never had a runner reach third base in the ballgame.
The Cougars are at Bowling Green Ballpark on Thursday when they take on the Hot Rods at 7:05 p.m. You can listen to the broadcast on www.kccougars.com, beginning with Cougars on Deck at 6:50 p.m. Right-hander Angel Baez (5-2) will start for the Cougars against southpaw Ryan Carpenter (9-4).
