Corpus Christi pounds Rocky Mountain, 6-2

On a night when much of Texas was under a storm advisory, it was snowing goals inside the American Bank Center. Geno Parrish and Justin Quenneville each tallied a pair of goals to lead Corpus Christi to their fifth straight win at home as the Corpus Christi Rayz beat the Rocky Mountain Rage 6-2 on Friday Night in the first ever meeting between the clubs. The win was the Rayz third in a row overall and sixth in their last seven home games. They improved to 18-14-5 and increased their second place lead over Austin to six points. The Rayz travel to Austin on Saturday afternoon for their final game of the weekend.

The Rayz took control in the first period with a pair of power play goals. Nick Lindberg got the scoring started for the Rayz when he tipped in a Todd Paul shot at 5:59 for his seventh goal of the year. The Rayz added to their lead when Justin Quenneville beat Trevor Cunning on a backhand from just outside the crease at 16:36 for his team leading 17th goal of the year. The Rage outshot the Rayz 12-11 in the first period, but Corpus Christi took a 2-0 lead into the second.

The Rayz resurgent power play erupted once again in the second period. Geno Parrish scored back to back power play goals 26 seconds apart. Parrish got his first of the night when he snuck in and took a beautiful back door pass from Quenneville and buried it for his fifth of the year at 11:22. Just 26 seconds later on a different power play, Parrish scored from the right point to give the Rayz a 4-0 lead. However, Rocky Mountain came back to stay with Corpus Christi. Dominic Noel scored at 13:11 to get the Rage on the board. Just 1:11 later at 14:22 Trevor Weisgerber finished off a beautiful four person play to cut the Rayz lead to 4-2. The Rayz outshot the Rage 13-10.

In the third period, the Rayz recaptured the momentum quickly with a goal 44 seconds into the frame. Justin Quenneville stole the puck from Cunning and buried it into the empty net. At 2:43 Todd Paul capped the scoring with a slapshot goal from the left point. The Rayz six-goal output was their third in the last six games. Corpus Christi outshot Rocky Mountain at 37-32 overall.

The win for the Rayz was their fifth in a row at the American Bank Center and sixth in the last seven games at the American Bank Center. Vogel made 30 saves on 32 shots, improving to 12-8-3. The Rage played their sixth in a row without a win and fell to 8-21-4. Cunning made 31 saves on 37 shots and suffered the loss, remaining winless on the year and fell to 0-8-1. The Rayz outshot the Rage 37-32. The Rayz went 4-9 on the power play, setting a season high for man advantage goals in a game. The Rage went 1-8.
